I've been interested in health and nutrition for as long as I can remember. After some very positive experiences with alternative medicine in my early twenties, I decided to go to naturopathic medical school. I graduated in 1998 but did not end up practicing for very long due to starting a family and wanting to stay home with my kids when they were little.
In 2009 I started sharing recipes, gardening info, and healthy lifestyle advice on a blog I named Healthy Green Kitchen. Over the next few years, I was asked to contribute recipes to a number of cookbooks, then landed my own book deal. My book One Simple Change: Surprisingly Easy Ways to Transform Your Life was published by Chronicle Books in 2013.
During the time I was working on One Simple Change, I wandered into a Crossfit/strength training gym looking for a way to help me manage the stress that came with writing a book. Though I'd never lifted weights before, I soon fell in love with barbell training. Among other benefits, it made me feel strong and capable, improved my confidence by leaps and bounds, and helped me manage my anxiety disorder. I decided to begin competing in powerlifting in 2014, and I have since competed in the USA Powerlifting (USAPL) Federation at the state, regional, national, and international level.
In 2015, I decided to become a coach. I wanted to learn the best evidence-based practices for introducing others to all of the benefits of strength training, along with eating for weight management, health, and athletic performance, that I myself I have experienced. I chose to take a hiatus from blogging/writing so I could focus all of my energy on my coaching pursuits.
I am happy to say I am now a personal trainer (I'm certified by the UK-based Shredded by Science Academy) as well as a USAPL-certified club level coach, and I also have both Level 1 and Level 2 (advanced) nutrition certifications from Precision Nutrition. I am currently working as a strength coach at Hudson Valley Raw Athletics in Highland, NY. I work as a strength and nutrition coach with clients from elsewhere online, and I am back to blogging as of September 2017.
